The HERMOSA Study: How a Simple Switch Can Reduce Harmful Chemicals in Your Body

ree

Are you concerned about the chemicals in your everyday beauty products? Many lotions, shampoos, and makeup contain potentially harmful endocrine disruptors—substances that can interfere with your hormones. A groundbreaking study, HERMOSA (meaning "beautiful" in Spanish), investigated how easily we can reduce our exposure to these chemicals. Researchers followed 100 Latina teenage girls, discovering that a simple switch to cleaner products yielded impressive and measurable results.

The HERMOSA Study: A Detailed Look

For three days, participants used only specially selected, non-toxic products provided by the study. These included shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturizer, soap (for home and purse), and deodorant. Each girl also chose four makeup items (foundation, mascara, eyeliner, lipstick/lip gloss, or sunscreen), focusing on what they most frequently use. If a participant didn't opt for a replacement, they were asked to forego that product during the study. All products were carefully screened to be free of parabens, triclosan, and oxybenzone (BP-3). Fragrance and perfumes were avoided to minimize phthalate exposure. Girls using Colgate Total toothpaste (containing triclosan) received alternative toothpaste.

Before and after the three-day period, the girls gave urine samples—spot samples collected at the same time of day to minimize daily fluctuations. The researchers also conducted interviews, collecting data on the families’ income, product use habits, and other details. At each visit, they measured the girls' height, weight, and body-fat percentage.

The Results: Significant Reductions

See the impact for yourself. This graph (from the Environmental Health Perspectives [EHP] journal's report on the HERMOSA study) visually demonstrates the significant reduction in harmful chemicals after only three days of using non-toxic products. This compelling data inspires action; start making changes today! The geometric mean (GM) provides a robust representation of this significant overall decrease. For example Phthalates MEP went from 78.2 to 56.4 in just 3 days!

The results revealed significant decreases in levels of specific chemicals in the urine samples:

Significant drops in several harmful chemicals: levels dropped significantly for mono-ethyl phthalate (MEP), methyl paraben, propyl paraben, triclosan, and oxybenzone (BP-3). The decreases averaged between 27% and 45%!

Quick Impacts: Urine tests showed that the reduction was present within just three days. This demonstrated the short-term nature of these chemicals in the body and the quick impact of switching products.

Focal Points: The largest decreases were observed in the most frequently used products, with a notable 70% reduction in triclosan among girls who previously used triclosan-containing (Colgate Total) toothpaste. Similarly, sunscreen users saw a 52% reduction in oxybenzone.

Unexpected Findings: Interestingly, while ethyl and butyl paraben levels increased slightly in some participants, the changes were minor. This highlights the complexity of detecting and eliminating these chemicals. It's crucial to remember that many products contain sub-ingredients and that even "paraben-free" or "phthalate-free" labels aren't always a guarantee. Independent, third-party testing is the only way to be certain. This study, while insightful, didn't include such testing.

Addressing Customer Concerns: Cost and Greenwashing

Many of my clients worry about the expense of non-toxic products. I often buy these items when they're on sale, which substantially reduces the cost. By staying informed through my newsletters, you can take advantage of sales on genuinely safe products, ensuring that you’re making the best choices for your health and the environment. I have done the research for you. If something is too expensive, we can discuss that and find another product. This is my passion, and I want to help you feel as good as I feel.

There's a lot of "greenwashing" in the industry. Companies often claim their products are free of contaminants, but you can only know for sure using third-party testing.

Start Your Non-Toxic Journey:

1. Read Labels Carefully: Look for "phthalate-free," "paraben-free," "triclosan-free," and "oxybenzone-free" labels. However, these labels aren't foolproof. I always call the manufacturer to confirm third-party testing results.

2. Use Online Resources Wisely: Websites like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) offer valuable ingredient information. However, remember that even their EWG Verified products aren't always third-party tested, so proceed with caution.

3. Begin Gradually: Start by swapping out one or two products at a time, focusing on the ones you use most often.

4. Embrace the Process, Manage Stress: Prioritize your well-being; make positive changes at your own pace!

The HERMOSA study shows that you *can* make a difference. By making conscious product choices, you can create a healthier and more beautiful future for yourself.
